Vietnam is one of the strongest countries exporting spices, ranking second in the world in exporting star anise. Vietnam and China are the only two countries that can produce star anise in large quantities. The reasons are favorable climate and large cultivation area for star anise. Vietnam has an anise growing area of about 40,000 hectares, mainly in Lang Son and Cao Bang. Amazingly, the annual output is more than 16,000 tons, making abundant source for exporting. According to data in 2023, Vietnam earned 83 million USD from exporting anise, with output reaching 16,136 tons. It was a sharp increase of 26% in volume. The average export price in 2023 reached 6,376 USD/ton, down 8% compared to the previous year. For 2023, India and China served as the two largest markets with 7,860 tons and 4,116 tons, accounting for 48.7% and 25.5% of the export market, respectively. Anise exports totaled 879 tons in January 2024, valued at over 4.5 million USD. While it was up 32% from January 2023, it was sharply down 18.8% from the previous month.
Vietnamese star anise is currently widely consumed throughout the world. The US, countries of the European Union (EU), East Asia (Japan, Taiwan-China, Korea), South Asia (India, Bangladesh), and the Middle East (UAE, Pakistan). Vietnam’s two principal export destinations for anise are China and India, which together account for 25% and roughly 50% of the total. The world’s largest market for star anise products is India. Presently, over 80% of imports of anise and cinnamon come from Vietnam, dominating the Indian market. Thus, Vietnam is this market’s main supplier of star anise. Star anise is a possible export from Vietnam to the US, where there is a sizable population and consumer demand for goods with health benefits.
